A Comprehensive Etymological Dictionary Of The Hebrew Language For Readers Of English (https://www.sefaria.org/Klein_Dictionary) Carta Jerusalem; 1st edition, 1987 |
ח The eighth letter of the Hebrew alphabet (‘heth’). It has the numerical value eight. Both in Heb. and Aram. the letter ח represented originally two different gutteral sounds, to which correspond in Ugar. ḥ and ẖ, Arab. ḥ and kh, SArab. ח and חֿ. In Akka. the sound corresponding to Arab. kh remained, that corresponding to ḥ appears as spiritus lenis. Through comparisons with Arab., etc. it is possible to differentiate various bases which have coincided in Heb. and Aram. spelling (see e.g. the bases חבל, חבר, חלה, חלל). [Nomen opificis formed from חתם according to the pattern פַּעָל.] חתן to become related by marriage. חָתָן m.n. 1 daughter’s husband. 2 bridegroom. [Related to Aram. חַתְנָא (= son-in-law, bridegroom), Syr. חַתֽנָא (= a connection by marriage, esp. son-in-law, brother-in-law, bridegroom), Arab. ḫatar (= son-in-law, bridegroom), Akka. ḫatānu (= son-in-law, brother-in-law). Some scholars connect these words with Akka. ḫatānu (= to protect), so that חָתָן would denote one who is protected by his wife’s father and mother. Many others compare Arab. ḫatana (= he circumcised) in reference to the ancient custom according to which circumcision was performed on young men before their marriage. Still others connect חָתָן with Arab. ḫatana (= he joined, connected). Derivative: חתן. חֹתֵן see חוֹתֵן. חֲתֻנָּה f.n. marriage, wedding (a hapax legomenon in the Bible, occurring Cant. 3:11 in the form חֲתֻנָּתוֹ). [From חתן.
