ז The seventh letter of the Hebrew alphabet. In PBH it has the numerical value seven. It alternates with ס (cp. עלז and עלס ), and with צ (cp. זעק and צעק, עלז and עלץ, זרב and צרב, זער and צער ). Heb. ז corresponds Aram.-Syr. ד , Ugar. d, Arab. dh, Ethiop. z, Akka. z. cp. e.g. Heb. זֶבַח , Aram. דּֽבַח , דִּבְחָא , Ugar. dbḥ, Arab. dhibḥ, Ethiop. sebḥ, Akka. zību (= sacrifice). cp. also Heb. בִּזֵּר, פִּזֵּר , Aram. בַּדַר (= he scattered), whence Arab. badhara (= he disseminated). [Formed from זרע with suff. ◌וֹן .] זַרְעִי adj. MH having seed, spermatic. [Formed from זֶרַע with suff. ◌ִי .] זַרְעִית ᴵ f.n. PBH offspring, posterity. [Formed from זֶרַע with suff. ◌ִית .] זַרְעִית ᴵᴵ f.n. NH skylark. [Formed from זֶרַע with suff. ◌ִית .] זרף to flow. [Base of זַרְזִיף (q.v.). Aram. זְרַף (= it flowed — said of a festering wound), prob. also Arab. dharafa (= it flowed).] זרק to throw, toss, sprinkle. זֶֽרֶק m.n. MH 1 sprinkling. NH 2 serum for injection. [From זרק .] זַרְקָא m.n. MH ‘ zarka’ — name of a disjunctive accent placed above the word (its form is ◌ ̈). [From זרק .] זַרְקוֹר m.n. NH searchlight, projector. [Coined of זָרַק אוֹר , lit. ‘that which throws light’.] זרר ᴵ to sneeze. זרר ᴵᴵ to press, squeeze. [A secondary form of זור ᴵᴵ. It occurs only in the form זֹרוּ , in the phrase לֹא זֹרוּ (= the wounds have not been pressed, Is. 1:6).] Prob. derivative: זַרְזִיר ᴵ זֶֽרֶת f.n. (pl. זְרָתוֹת , also (זְרָתִים ) 1 span. PBH 2 little finger. [JAram.-Syr. זַרְתָּא , Mand. זירתא (= span). Of uncertain etymology.] Derivatives: זֵרָה, זרת . זרת to measure with a span. ח The eighth letter of the Hebrew alphabet (‘heth’). It has the numerical value eight. Both in Heb. and Aram. the letter ח represented originally two different gutteral sounds, to which correspond in Ugar. ḥ and ẖ, Arab. ḥ and kh, SArab. ח and חֿ . In Akka. the sound corresponding to Arab. kh remained, that corresponding to ḥ appears as spiritus lenis. Through comparisons with Arab., etc. it is possible to differentiate various bases which have coincided in Heb. and Aram. spelling (see e.g. the bases חבל , חבר , חלה , חלל ). Heb. ח sometimes alternates with Aram. ע , Arab. ‘and gh (see חֹב , צבע and רעב .)
