ז The seventh letter of the Hebrew alphabet. In PBH it has the numerical value seven. It alternates with ס (cp. עלז and עלס), and with צ (cp. זעק and צעק, עלז and עלץ, זרב and צרב, זער and צער). Heb. ז corresponds Aram.-Syr. ד, Ugar. d, Arab. dh, Ethiop. z, Akka. z. cp. e.g. Heb. זֶבַח, Aram. דּֽבַח, דִּבְחָא, Ugar. dbḥ, Arab. dhibḥ, Ethiop. sebḥ, Akka. zību (= sacrifice). cp. also Heb. בִּזֵּר, פִּזֵּר, Aram. בַּדַר (= he scattered), whence Arab. badhara (= he disseminated). Heb. ז also corresponds Aram.-Syr. ז, Ugar. z, Arab. z, Ethiop. z, Akka. z. cp. e.g. Heb. זַָנֶה, Aram. זְנָא, Syr. zannī́, Arab. zanā (= he committed fornication), Ethiop. zeynat (= pollution). זְאֵב m.n. wolf. [Related to Aram.-Syr. דִּיב, דִּיבָא, Arab. dhi’b, Akka. zibu (= wolf), Ethiop. ze’b (= hyena), Egypt. sjb (= jackal). cp. דֹּב (= bear).] Derivatives: זאב, זְאֵבָה, זְאֵבוֹן, זְאֵבִי, זְאֵבִית.

זְאֵבִית f.n. NH lupus (a skin disease). [Formed from זְאֵב (= wolf) with suff. ◌ִית, as loan translation of lupus, from L. lupus (= wolf).]

זַאֲטוּט m.n. PBH (also spelled זַעֲטוּט) small boy, youngster. [Of uncertain origin; possibly standing for זָטוּט, זָאטוּט, and formed from JAram. זוּטָא (= small), through reduplication of the ט.]

זֹאת f. pron. this (corresponding to the m. form זֶה).

זָב adj. one that has a flux. [Part. of זוּב (= to flow). See זוב and cp. the first element in זַבְלְגָן.] Derivative: זָבוּת.

זִבּוּרִי adj. NH of bad quality, poor. [From זִבּוּרִית (q.v.).]

זִבּוּרִית f.n. PBH poor soil, goods of poor quality. [Of uncertain origin. Perhaps orig. meaning ‘a stony field’, and related to Arab. zabara (= he hurled stones at). According to some scholars זִבּוּרִית is related to Arab. ṣabbūra (= bad, stony land).] cp. זִבֹּרֶת.

זְבוֹרִית f.n. PBH ballast. [From L. saburra (= sand, ballast), whence also Arab. ṣābūra (= ballast). See ‘sand’ in my CEDEL and cp. ‘sabulus’ ibid.]

זְבִיל m.n. NH bomb-rack. [From JAram. זְבִילָא (= case, container), which together with Syr. זַבִּילָא is borrowed from Akka. zabbīlu (= basket).]
